Rohani: Wide range of activities in SCAC, CBRC

SRI AMAN: Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development through the Social Welfare Department has a wide range of activities for its Senior Citizens Activity Centres (SCAC) and Community-Based Rehabilitation Centres (CBRC) in the state.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, said this was to keep the residents in good health and encourage interaction between them to promote a positive and creative mind.

“This kind of activities and especially early intervention will also help to rehabilitate persons with disabilities. The elderly and the disabled are always looked after with assistance from various government agencies, the private sector and local communities. In Lingga, since operating, the centre gets good support from the community around Sri Aman Division,” she told reporters after opening the centre in Lingga yesterday.

She revealed that up to-date, there were 45 Senior Citizens Activity Centres nationwide and Sarawak had seven; namely in Kuching, Miri, Sibu, Beladin, Tatau, Dalat and Lingga.

She also said a total of RM8,910,668 in grants were needed annually to run the Community-Based Rehabilitation Centres in various divisions and districts in Sarawak.

After the official opening of the centre, Rohani presented a mock cheque for RM25,000 to 25 of her ministry staff who were affected by the recent floods. The cheque was received by state Social Welfare Department director Abang Shamshuddin Abang Seruji.

Lingga assemblywoman Simoi Peri, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development secretary-general Datuk Sabariah Hassan, Social Welfare Department director-general Datuk Noraini Mohd Hashim, Social Institute of Malaysia director Dr Al-Azmi Bakar and Sri Aman Resident Jonathan Lugoh were present.
