Dispute over patrimony assets leaves billions unutilised

SIBU: The patrimony assets among the Muslim community in the country that are not managed by Islamic and Syariah laws has resulted in billions worth of assets not fully utilised.

According to the Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister Office (Islamic Affairs), Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman, this happened due to the dispute among the family members over the distribution of the (patrimony) assets.

“There are many of such cases in Malaysia. We cannot utilise the asset because of the family dispute,” he said at the one-day ‘Patrimony Seminar’ held at LAKIS Hall located in the compound of An-Nur Mosque here, yesterday.

More than 300 participants attended the seminar jointly organised by Jabatan Kehakiman Syariah Sarawak (JKSS), Sarawak Islamic Information Centre and Biro Perkhidmatan Pendidikan Majlis Islam Sarawak (BPP-MIS).

Daud added that at the end of the day the lands (patrimony asset) were left idle and not benefitting anyone.

“The only answer to this situation is to refer to the Islamic teaching by going through the Syariah Court which will decide on the fair distribution and who have the rights to receive the assets,” he said.

Daud thus called on all the seminar participants to learn and utilise the knowledge which they have gained from it.

“We Muslims are very fortunate because we have the patrimony system management.

“We should fully utilise it in order to strengthen the relationship among family members and prevent them from any unnecessary dispute that will only break them apart,” he said.

Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapa’ee and the head of Syarie Judge from Jabatan Kehakiman Syariah Sarawak Datu Mohd Ali Mohd Sheriff were also present.
