Global Information Day answers questions on study options

SIBU: Many anxious parents are thinking about the next phase of their children’s education, following the release of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) results recently.

The ‘4Ws and 1H – What, Where, Which, When, How’ questions such as what course to take, where to get more information, which institution to choose from, when is the course commencing and how to apply, are not uncommon.

Parents want the best for their children when it comes to education but face dilemmas on the best option.

For SPM holders, should they continue with Form 6 or proceed to a pre-university programme? If the option is the latter, then they should pursue A Level, Foundation or Matriculation programmes.

“Parents are bewildered by the seemingly limitless choices available and deciding the most suitable one can be confusing and even frustrating at times,” a statement from Global Educational Services (GES) Centre said, highlighting that students who achieved excellent results in SPM or STPM could opt for accelerated programmes, which are faster and incur less costs than the conventional way.

For those who did not do as well, the centre said it did not mean that the journey had come to an end.

“We often come across high achievers, who after being asked of what they want to study as well as their career choice, are dumbfounded by the questions.

“Students may be influenced by peers when selecting career pathways. There is a gap between where they are right now, what they want to be in the future, and matching the course with their goals. For parents, cost is also an important concern. This said, most institutions provide a variety of scholarships, such as those that recognise academic achievements (merit scholarships), as well as those recognising non-academic achievements (scholarships for sports, special talents or hardship),” GES said.

Those still wrestling with the ‘4Ws-1H’ questions, can come to GES’ Global Information Day where the centre’s experienced and dedicated counsellors will help them to better understand the study options and available financial assistance, as well as any other related advice on what to do next.

Consultations are free of charge. For more information, contact GES Miri at 085-434236, GES Bintulu (086-333405), GES Sibu (084-338532), GES Kuching (082-577802); or email to [email protected].

The centre has also extended its office hours to help parents and students.
