KUCHING: PKR Mambong branch chairman Willie Mongin has urged Unit Kerjasama Awam Swasta (Ukas), an agency under the Prime Minister’s Department to explain why the bridge at Kpg Benuk in Jalan Puncak Borneo is built without any strong footing and piling.

He said Ukas officials ought to go to the ground to check whether the bridge construction was
based on specification as the local people were concerned about their safety when using the bridge later.

“Who approved the specification and why was the specification approved even without the very basic things?

“Furthermore, the ground where the bridge is built is a little soggy. The beams sit on top of the riverbank and are exposed after a landslide,” he told a press conference here Tuesday.

Willie said the contractor just patched up the exposed structures with block stones without making any other improvement.

“We also urge Ukas officials to do some improvement works to the bridge structure to prevent any untoward incident from happening.”

Willie also called on Ukas to explain the reason why a contractor was appointed to build the bridge and the village corridor when the projects were initially awarded to the Defence Ministry.

“They (Ukas) are supposed to ask the Defence Ministry to carry out the project but out of the blue, a contractor is doing the project right now.

“If this project is awarded to the contractor, why was the Defence Ministry mentioned as the executing agency? Why is there a sudden shift from the Defence Ministry to a contractor?” he asked.
