SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak (UCTS) brand ambassadors Nick and Stella Chung are set to lead a large congregation of young people here to say ‘No to Drugs’.

The targeted audience of about 3,500 people, comprising youth, school children and parents will make the declaration during the first half of the launching of the Charis Youth Anti-Drug Performance at Kingwood Hotel on April 11.

“The declaration will be led by Nick and Stella, Sarawak-grown singers, where all the audience will join them to say ‘No to Drugs’ and not to touch it (drugs),” organising chairman Dr Wong Sing Sing told a press conference at Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) office yesterday.

The three-part programme, from 7pm till 9.30pm, is jointly organised by UCTS, United Chinese Association (UCA) Sibu; Association of Churches (ACS) Sarawak, Sibu branch; SMC and Charis Youth Centre (CYC).

Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is also UCTS chairman, will officiate at the launching of the event.

Other distinguished guests include SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, deputy chairman Dato Andrew Wong and vice-chancellor of UCTS Prof Dato Dr Abdul Hakim Juri.

UCTS deputy vice-chancellor (academic) Professor Dato Dr Sabarudin Mohd told the same press conference that getting Nick and Stella to perform at the event is most ideal since the target audience are the young people.

Sabarudin expressed optimism that the young people would be inspired by the siblings’ healthy lifestyle.

“I believe they are the role models that our young people look up to for inspiration.

“In them, they will be able to see the many opportunities in life and stay away from drugs which are harmful and can destroy their future.

“The key objective of the event is to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs,” he added.

Sabarudin said the first part of the programme will be the launching with welcoming dance and address, followed by second part which features drama and singing performances by CYC and sharing by former drug addicts on their experiences.

UCTS senior manager of marketing and corporate affairs Lu Yew King stated that Nick and Stella will perform at the last part of the programme.

“Reason is we want the audience, many of whom are their fans, to go through the entire programme,” Lu explained.

He reckoned with their brand ambassadors more young people would check out the event.

He said they had also engaged popular singer Hafiz Suip.

“We need these artistes to help portray our branding – UCTS a higher education (institution), which Sarawakians can be proud of,” he said, adding that the Green Building Index (GBI) Platinum rating award would make UCTS the first university in the world to receive the highest GBI rating.

Lu also mentioned that these three artistes had many followers.

The press conference was also attended by SMC deputy chairman Dato Andrew Wong, Sibu UCA president Ting Huat Chie and pastor Ting Leh Na from ACS Sarawak, Sibu branch.
