MIRI: Kampung Batu Satu, Lutong resident Yahya Abdullah has appealed to the Immigration Department to release his family members from the department’s depot in Bekenu.

The Melanau fisherman claimed that the department detained his wife and children during an operation to nab illegal immigrants.

He claimed his family members were rounded up along with the illegals because they did not have identification documents.

According to him this was because their documents were destroyed in a fire several years ago and they are still waiting for the National Registration Department (JPN) to replace them.

Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Sarawak deputy commissioner III Jofri Jaraiee urged JPN and the Immigration Department to resolve the matter.

“We do not want any possibility of our own people being regarded as illegal immigrants,” he said.
