KUCHING: The number of participants at the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP)-Shell Road Safety Council (MKJR) traffic games at Taman Lalulintas Kenyalang yesterday was among the biggest.

The one-day event saw SJK (C) Sungai Apong crowned best primary school while SMK (A) Tunaz was adjudged best secondary school for the games.

Event chairperson Cr Jong Nyong Khoon in his speech at the prize presentation ceremony said the traffic games aimed to educate and provide early awareness to students on the importance of road safety.

“Through this game, we believe that our fellow participants can learn the basics of road safety, laws and regulations which can shape them when they are finally behind the wheel in the future,” said Jong.

He added that the games also aim to inculcate good road safety behaviour among the younger generations.

“With good road safety behaviour, we believe that future generations will be more aware and careful on the road and what is important is being considerate to other road users too,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kuching Resident Shukarmin Chasemon said he was pleased with number of participants turning for the event.

“The big number of participants in the games this year is a statement of the schools’ awareness to inculcate road safety behaviour in their students,” said Shukarmin.

He hoped what was learned from the games would be used and applied when they are on the road.

A total of 36 primary and secondary schools in Kuching participated in the games, which is entering its 52nd year.
