PUTRAJAYA: A total of 124 types of medical equipment purchased by hospitals or clinics are exempted from the goods and services tax (GST), following the Health Ministry’s intervention.

Its minister Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam said he hoped that the exemption would assist private healthcare facilities
to reduce costs in providing its services.

“Previously all of the medical equipment were subjected to the GST but through the ministry’s intervention, some of them are exempted from the GST,” he said at a press conference here yesterday.

He said for medicines, the ministry had successfully expanded from 2,900 to 4,215 brands of medicines which were exempted from the GST.

Dr Subramaniam hoped that the additional proposal of the list of medical equipment and medicines to be exempted from GST, that had been submitted to the Finance Ministry, would be taken into account for the benefit of the people. — Bernama
