MIRI: The donation of aluminium ring tabs continues to pour in to support the ‘Ring Tab Charity Project’ promoted by the Lions Club of Batu Niah.

Yesterday, some 29kg of ring tabs was handed over to the club by SUPP Pujut branch Zumba class. According to its representative Liew Sok Kuan, the effort would not be a reality if not for her supportive trainees.

“I have heard about the project last year and figured that collecting ring tabs for prosthesis legs would be quite interesting. So I told my class about the project and off we commenced with the ring tab-hunting project,” she said, adding that she thanked the local eateries for their support in contributing the aluminium cans.

“I was overwhelmed by the perseverance showed by the trainees as merely six months later, they successfully gathered buckets of ring tabs.”

As the project is a long term programme, Liew pledged to continue the hunt with her class for as long as possible.

Meanwhile, project coordinator Alan Yong disclosed that the ring tab, which is the firmest yet lightest part of the whole aluminium can, will then be used to make prostheses. He estimated 3,000 tabs are needed to make a pair of prosthetic legs.

“To date, we have received nearly 100 kg of ring tabs and after this, we will be sending these to a collection centre in Kuching, before handing them over to Prostheses Foundation headquartered in Thailand. The tabs will then be manufactured into coupling equipment, nuts, rings and screws that assemble a pair of prosthetic legs.”
