Prepaid mobile users advised to find alternative

KUALA LUMPUR: Consumers who are finding it difficult to obtain pre-paid card or top-up should opt for post paid as an alternative because it would be cheaper in the long run, a leading telecommuncations dealer suggested yesterday.

The managing director of Hussein Resources Sdn Bhd, Saifuddin S Hussein, said the probable reason for the shortage of pre paid cards was the confusion on the levy of six per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST).

“Dealers were not clear whether to absorb the tax or pass it on to the consumers,” he said.

While this was being sorted out, it would be advisable for the consumers to find alternatives so that their communication needs were not disrupted, he added.

Saifuddin, who operates a mobile dealership of a major telecommunication company, was commenting on the complaints received by the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Association (Fomca), that consumers were claiming that it was difficult to buy prepaid reload cards since the implementation of the GST on April 1.

Fomca deputy president, Mohd Yusof Abdul Rahman, said the government should step up its enforcement to ensure that traders did not profit at the expense of consumers. — Bernama
