KUCHING: Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC), an agency under Ministry of Finance, held its first Social Enterprise Roundtable for Kuching at a leading hotel here on Wednesday.

The event, held in collaboration with the iCube Innovation Sdn Bhd, was attended by 35 participants comprising university lecturers, young professionals and entrepreneurs.

MaGIC executive director of social entrepreneurship Ehon Chan who chaired the roundtable saw a lively and informative session when participants exchanged ideas and views on defining Malaysia’s social enterprise.

Chan remarked that Kuching was one of the stops for a series of roundtables held nationwide to collect input for a blueprint on Malaysian social entrepreneurs which will be launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak sometime next month.

He explained that having a clear definition of social enterprise with all the key stakeholders especially in public and private institutions will provide a platform for all beneficiaries to share their opinions on ways to add value and support such enterprises whether through policy, products or services like loans and grants.

He added that another similar roundtable session is held in Miri today (April 10).

MaGIC, based in Cyberjaya, was launched by US President Barack Obama and Najib on April 27 last year. MaGIC and iCube Innovation will jointly organise a roadshow on May 14.
