MIRI: The search is still on for more Kata and Kumite athletes to represent the state in next year’s Sukma to be hosted by Sarawak.

State chief coach Ngui Siou Song told thesundaypost that they have scouted 17 – 12 men and five women – since last December.

He said they aim to finalise the state karate team for Sukma by end of this year.

The 17 from Miri and Kuching are currently training under their own instructors.

The plan is to send them for exposure in tournaments outside the state such as the East Malaysia Zone Shitoryu Karate Championship in Sabah and two championships in Kuala Lumpur all in May.

“Furthermore, we are still waiting for approval from the State Sports Council for a new full-time coach from Kuala Lumpur.

“Then only we can have a centralised training for them,” Ngui added.
