KOTA KINABALU: Motorists who park their vehicles illegally at shopping malls will be fined by the City Hall enforcement team, said Sabah police contingent’s Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department deputy head ACP Shukri Yaacob.

He said the police and City Hall enforcement team would issue summonses to vehicle owners, including motorcyclists, who were caught parking their vehicles at non-parking areas.

“This is to ensure road users abide by the traffic law and to prevent traffic congestion at shopping malls and shopping complexes,” he said during a motorcycle awareness campaign at City Mall shopping complex in Luyang here yesterday.

“The campaign is to remind motorcyclists to always ensure their vehicles are properly locked to prevent from being stolen,” he said.

Also present at the event were deputy city police chief Superintendent Mohd Azhar Hamin, Crime Investigation Department chief DSP Nor Azizulkifli Mansor, ASP Kalsom Idris, City Mall manager Jenny Chin and City Mall safety and security manager Redi Sakan.

Meanwhile, Mohd Azhar said only one motorcycle theft case had been reported in City Mall in the first four months of this year.

“Last year also saw one such case reported in City Mall.

“Although the figure looks very small, but we will continue to monitor City Mall and other shopping malls to prevent any incidents from happening.

“Therefore we urge all shopping mall managements to ensure high security in and around their premises and to immediately report to the police on any incident or suspicious activity so proper action can be taken,” he said.
