MARUDI: The Fire Prevention Safety Competition seeks to ensure no fires are recorded in the Marudi constituency.

Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Water Supply) Datuk Sylvester Entri Muran said the year-long competition aims to prevent fires from occurring particularly in longhouses.

“When fires involve longhouses, we lose everything. For example if a boat capsizes in the water, at least we have some property left behind. But once we ‘capsize’ on land, everything is lost,” he said when launching the competition yesterday.

“Once our longhouses are burnt down and we have big loses, the assistance provided by the government can never compensate all the loses. We cannot blame each other because all longhouse occupants also suffer big loses.”

Entri stressed that longhouse residents should always remember the value of their longhouses.

“When we think about the cost, then we should take care of the longhouse’s safety.

“When we are busy looking to make a living, we leave the longhouse without anyone to look after and take care of it. Fire is our enemy and we don’t want it to come to our longhouses,” he added.
