The injured monkey is now in the care of the Sarawak Forestry Corporation in Sibu.

SIBU: The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) is hopeful that the monkey that suffered an electrical shock when it wandered into the Deshon Road substation on Wednesday is recovering.

SFC officer Nickson Joseph Robi said the monkey, which was now in their care, was eating and drinking well yesterday morning, but was still suffering pain from the burns.

He said its swollen wounds were recovering after its skin peeled off.

“We still have to keep it in isolation for observation, and if its condition worsens, we will call in a veterinarian. We haven’t taken it to the veterinarian yet because it is not good to move the monkey now.”

Nickson said the monkey continued to rest and sleep most of the time.

Members of the public have continued to show concern for the burnt monkey after The Borneo Post published its plight on Thursday.

SFC has received numerous calls in the past two days enquiring about the condition of the injured monkey after it suffered 70 per cent burns to its body from the electric shock it received when it climbed up the 33kV Main Busbar at Deshon Road power substation on Wednesday.

A technician from Sarawak Energy Bhd took the monkey to a veterinarian before handing it over to Sibu SFC.

“We have to thank the media for reporting on these cases in a constructive light and highlighting wildlife awareness to the public,” added Nickson.

He said they had received more than a dozen such cases since last year.

“The public should continue to play a constructive role in wildlife conservation. When they stumble upon such cases, they can call us at 084-337444,” he said.
