KUCHING: The state aspires for full Internet coverage by 2030 including in rural areas, said Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunication) Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom.

He said presently it has about 80 per cent Internet coverage.

“The state government acknowledges the importance of the Internet for our economic adventure and for our school children in rural areas so our aspiration is to have full coverage by 2030,” he said at the launching of Digi 4G LTE services for Kuching at Plaza Merdeka yesterday.

Dr Rundi believes that the state can achieve full Internet coverage by 2030 with the help of service providers, despite the challenge posed by rough terrain and huge size of the state.

He praised Digi for providing service with speed and capacity which augurs well with the state government’s plan to ensure the state was on par with or ahead of other states.

He believed Digi would expand such service to towns and cities in Sarawak.

“At one time, we (state government) were well below them (other states), but right now we are with them (on par), if not ahead,” he said.

He said Sacofa was faced with the challenge of building towers in small towns that require Internet coverage of only five kilometres radius.

Dr Rundi urged parents to guide their children in the positive use of the Internet.

Present were Digi chief marketing officer Christian Thrane, chief sales officer Loh Keh Jiat and Sarawak head of region Benny Wee.

Thrane later took a video call from Digi chief executive officer Albern Murthy from Shah Alam in Kuala Lumpur.
