KUALA LUMPUR: The case where residents in Taman Medan Petaling Jaya, protested over the use of a large cross at a church on Sunday, clearly shows why the Sedition Act is needed, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri.
She said the act can be a shield to protect and preserve the multi-racial harmony in the country.
“It is also a clear signal to the opposition that it (act) is not a weapon of the government against them. This is because I understand, there were also government supporters who took part in the protest,” she told reporters at Parliament’s lobby yesterday.
She was commenting on the case where the protesters had voiced their dissatisfaction over the use of a large cross, a sacred symbol of Christianity, at shoplot in Taman Medan which was converted to a church.
She added that she was of the view that action could taken against the protesters if they had broken any laws, either through the Sedition Act or the Penal Code but left this to the Attorney-General.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday said police would investigate the people who staged the protest and that action would be taken against them if they were found to have broken any laws, including under the Sedition Act or other existing laws. — Bernama
