Rompin by-election: Straight fight between BN, PAS

ROMPIN: Rompin parliamentary by-election will see a straight fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Hasan Arifin and PAS candidate Nazri Ahmad.

Election Commission (EC) returning officer Datuk Fadzilla Salleh announced this after the nomination process at the Dewan Jubli Perak Sultan Ahmad Shah here closed at 10am after it was opened for one hour.

He said EC received the nomination papers from Nazri, 40, at 9.05am and Hasan, 62, at 9.07am.

The nomination process, which began at 9am, run smoothly with thousands of supporters from both parties complying with the regulation to be outside the nomination centre throughout the nomination process which was closed at 10 am.

“No nomination papers that was received by EC was rejected,” he said after announcing the names of Nazri and Hasan as PAS and BN candidates who will contest in the Rompin parliamentary by-election on May 5.

Hasan, who is acting Rompin Umno division chief, was accompanied by about 5,000 BN supporters led by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to the nomination centre.

Meanwhile Nazri, who is Rompin PAS president and Pahang PAS Youth chief, was accompanied by about 2,000 supporters led by PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.

Also present were PKR two vice presidents Nurul Izzah Anwar and Tian Chua. — Bernama
