KOTA KINABALU: Talisman Malaysia Limited, a subsidiary of global oil and gas company Talisman Energy, yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Environment (DoE) Sabah on cooperation in the implementation of environmental awareness programmes in Sabah.

The MoU was signed between Duncan Smart, Talisman Malaysia’s vice-president and Sabah asset manager, and Datin Hajah Halini bte Ghazali, director of DoE Sabah at the official opening ceremony of an Environmental Awareness Camp held at the Forestry Department’s Peat Swamp Field Centre in Klias, Beaufort in conjunction with World Earth Day 2015.

Talisman Malaysia is the sponsor of the three-day environmental awareness camp which is participated by some 50 scouts and 20 pollution monitoring squad members from the Rakan Alam Sekitar (Environmental Friends) unit in the Beaufort and nearby districts.

Speaking at the ceremony yesterday, Duncan said the MoU was about increasing the existing cooperation with DoE Sabah through the implementation of environmental awareness education and conservation programmes over the next five years.

The sponsorship of the environmental awareness camp in Klias represents Talisman Malaysia’s commitment which forms the spirit of the MoU.

Duncan hopes that the participants will benefit from the lessons learnt at the camp and become active proponents in caring for the environment.

He said they had sponsored four environmental awareness education programmes since 2013. All these environmental education programmes would not have been a success without the close cooperation and strong support of our partners, particularly, DoE Sabah.

Halini, in her opening speech, commended Talisman Malaysia for the continued commitment in environmental awareness education and conservation programmes.

She also hoped that the camp participants would become the ears and eyes of DoE Sabah as well as to the partnering agencies, which are the Fire and Rescue Department and the Forestry Department in safeguarding and conserving peat swamp forest in the Klias area.
