MIRI: The Kayan community should be open to change, says Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

He said as part of the Orang Ulu group, the community should prepare for change while setting their vision, goals and aspiration.

In his capacity as president of Persatuan Kayan Sarawak (Sarawak Kayan Association), he advised the Kayans to unite and work for the socio-economic growth of the race to be on par with other races.

He made these remarks in his address at the launching of the Ledoh Celebration 2015 in Bintulu recently, which was attended by more than 1,000 Kayans from Baram, Belaga and Sungai Asap.

The ‘ledoh’ celebration is a thanksgiving ceremony and an important event in the calendar of the Kayan community. It is an annual event held after paddy harvesting, marking a new beginning or year for the next planting season.

On another note, Dennis said the community should be proud of the achievements made by certain members of the community or companies owned by Kayans, which he pointed out augured well towards making Kayans a progressive community in the state.

Commenting on their membership recruitment drive, he said the response had been encouraging which would enable them to achieve their target of establishing branches in Sibu and Kuala Lumpur by 2016.

“Bigger membership can be achieved by opening more branches in major cities as more Kayans especially the youth are migrating to big towns and cities,” he added.

He described the association as the best platform to retain and enhance Kayan community way of life and cultural heritage.
