KUCHING: The increasing cyber threats and vulnerabilities in the world today are very alarming and cyber attacks on individuals, organisations and the nations are damaging and very costly, said Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

“As a result, the standard development works of information security need to catch up with the rapid growth of cyber threats and emerging technologies to protect both nations and organisations with effective security measures,” he said in his speech read by Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here yesterday.

“Therefore it is vital that every national Standards Body in Subcommittee 27 (SC 27) actively participate in this meeting to continue to develop international standards and guidelines that are relevant to your respective countries and critical industries,” he added.

Abang Johari was standing in for the chief minister for the officiating of the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27-IT Security Techniques Meeting at BCCK, which was attended by 200 members from 30 countries.

Technocrats, government officials and policy makers deliberated on the development of global standards for protection.

Adenan added that the increasing pervasiveness, connectivity and globalisation of ICT coupled with the rapid changing dynamic nature of cyber threats and commitment to the use of ICT for socio-economic development brought about the urgent need to protect the critical information infrastructure to provide greater control.

“This means the governments around the world including Malaysia must adopt an integrated approach to protect these infrastructures from cyber threats,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin revealed that Malaysia was in the process of translating the latest version of ISO/IEC 27001 Information Security Management System-Requirement (ISMS) as well as ISO/IEC 27002 Code of Practice for information security controls to Bahasa Melayu.

“We strongly believe that it will accelerate the adoption of ISMS into Malaysian Industry especially in Critical Network Information Infrastructure or CNII sectors,” he added.

Director General Of Standards Malaysia Datuk Fadilah Baharin, ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 27 chairman Dr Walter Fumy were among those present.

The meeting began on May 3 and will end on May 12. It is the first time that it is held in Sarawak.
