MIRI: Fourteen people – 13 of them female odd job workers – had a scare of their lives when the van they were in burst into flames near Lutong Bridge yesterday.

Fortunately, all of them, including the male driver, managed to scramble out of the vehicle in time and were not hurt.

A victim said the scary episode unfolded shortly after the van passed through the bridge at about 8.20am.

They were all going to Pujut 8 for grass cutting and drain cleaning works.

Driver Handson Galau Ajing, 23, related that a passenger spotted smoke billowing near her seat after the van passed the bridge.

“She immediately asked me to pull over,” said Handson, who was glad no one was hurt.

A fire engine from Lopeng fire station was immediately summoned to the scene, and the fire was doused within minutes.

The incident caused a traffic jam.
