KANOWIT: Police on Thursday arrested five lorry drivers and seized their lorries laden with 104 logs suspected to be smuggled at Nibong Tada.

Kanowit police chief DSP Ismail Mahmood told a press conference that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem was serious about tackling illegal logging.

“The police will monitor the illegal activities closely,” he said.

He urged members of the public not to engage in the illegal activities as it would cause problems with regard to Native Customary Rights land.

On the raid on Thursday from 6 to 7pm, Mahmood said the police had acted following a tip-off.

The five lorry drivers arrested are aged between 25 and 40.

Mahmood said the case would be referred to the Forestry Department.
