MIRI: Women in the rural areas should not be left behind by modern technologies, but should educate themselves on how to use these technologies to improve their living standard.

This call was made by a political secretary to the chief minister, Kijan Toynbee, in her address at a Women’s Day celebration held at a longhouse in Bario Asal last Saturday.

“Today, there are so many modern technologies to help women move forward. Some women also use such technology to market their produce. These technologies include the internet,” she said.

Kijan added that those who want to move forward in line with today’s modern advancements must be willing to put time aside to learn how to use the technologies to help them achieve results.

“You must not be left behind. In order to move forward or become a leader, not only in the society, but also for our own family, we must be willing to learn and educate ourselves on current technologies,” she said.

Touching on today’s women, Kijan said being a woman in this modern era is different from the olden days when most women were confined to the kitchen.

“There are so many women professionals today, including those who are also active and doing well in politics.

“All these achievements can only be obtained when there is enough effort put in by the person involved,” she said, adding women should always work hard in whatever they do and not see themselves as the weaker partners of men.

Meanwhile, the Women’s Day celebration was attended by about 200 women from various longhouses and villages in Bario.

The event included a three-day leadership seminar and talk which took place from Friday until Sunday.

A simple cake cutting ceremony was also held at the function to commemorate the celebration.
