SIBU: The family of Pelagus assemblyman George Lagong,55, is now spending their Gawai in Sibu Hosptial as he fights for his life in the ICU after suffering serious head injuries in an accident at Sebangkoi, 6km from Sarikei, on Gawai eve.

George was driving his wife Sumie Janting and sons, Norman Nuing, 15, and Winston Demang, 9 to Bintulu from Kuching to celebrate Gawai when their four-wheel drive vehicle went out of control and plunged down the ravine.

George was rushed to Sarikei Hospital where he was operated on and later transferred to Sibu Hospital and admitted to the ICU the same night.

His sons Dickson, 34, Kenneth, 33 and Jason Jalin, 30, and his mother arrived here on Gawai Day while his only daughter Gratia Gading, 24, studying UK will arrive on Friday.

The eldest son Dickson, in a press statement, called for prayers, saying his father was stable though still in critical condition.

He said his mother and two brothers travelling with his father were in good shape.

Dickson added in his press statement: “It’s been very hard and painful for our family and relatives. Some were being told about it and were shocked.”

Sarikei traffic police investigating officer Insp Mohd Hazwan was also at the hospital on Monday.

The police said the road was slippery after the rain when the accident occurred.

George won the Pelagus Seat as an independent candidate in the 10th state election in 2011.

He later joined Sarawak Workers Party (SWP), before joining the new Barisan Nasional-friendly Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) party but left after a brief spell to be an independent assemblyman.

Meanwhile, Dudong assemblyman Yap Hoi Liong visited George at the hospital yesterday morning and gave moral support to his family members.
