Climbers trapped on Mt Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: About 105 people which include guides, climbers and park rangers are trapped on Mount Kinabalu. Rescue operations are underway.

It is believed that five guests at Panar Laban, 10 minutes’ walk from Laban Rata were killed by falling rocks after this morning’s tremors. Gunting Lagadan has also been reported to be damaged by boulders.

Sabah Parks authorities has cancelled all climbing activities for safety reasons.

According to official reports from the Sabah Meteorological Centre, the quake this morning was a moderate one measuring 5.9MW with its epicentre occurring in Ranau. No tsunami threat was reported.

The meteorological department also discounted rumours of aftershocks at about 9am circulating online.
