SIBU: United People’s Party (UPP) Dudong branch chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King led a group of party leaders and members to pay Gawai visits to residents of Rumah Sandom and Rumah Mengga at Sungai Pak and Ulu Sungai Salim last Wednesday.

He was joined by political secretary to chief minister Pau Kiew Chuong, UPP Women chief Kapitan Connie Loh and UPP Dudong Iban Committee chief Bansa Sandah.

The guests were given a rousing traditional welcome by the people of both longhouses, led by their respective chieftains.

Tiong’s visit was also to inspect the 1.3km stretch leading to Rumah Sandom, which was repaired by Public Works Department after Tiong conveyed a request by Tuai Rumah Sandom to improve the condition of the road.

During the visit, Tiong – who is also Sibu Municipal Council chairman – pledged a donation of RM10,000.00 to Rumah Sandom for the construction of its utility house. Later when they arrived at Rumah Mengga, Tiong and his entourage received similar warm welcome.

In his opening remarks, Tiong said he was touched by the community for their support in the last two general elections.

He called on the folk there to continue rallying behind Barisan Nasional  so that more rural development would come their way. Tiong also pledged a donation of RM10,000 to the longhouse for building its community store room.
