SIBU: The improved performance of students here in public examinations like UPSR, SPM and STPM last year is due largely to the dedication and commitment of teachers.

Stating this at the Sibu Divisional-level Teachers Day celebration at Kingwood Hotel here yesterday, Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said he expected the teachers to sustain their noble efforts in educating the children.

He congratulated all schools here for their excellent results in last year’s UPSR, SPM and STPM examinations.

“At the state-level, Sibu was placed fifth in the UPSR last year and second in SPM. Our SMK Chung Hua was adjudged the best school in Malaysia in last year’s STPM,” he said.

Tiong said these outstanding achievements were due to the teachers’ dedication, commitment, teamwork and sacrifices.

“A professional teacher is one who is knowledgeable and very dedicated; one who guides the students in the academic as well as character-building.

“Good values must be placed in the education system to create a society with integrity and respect,” he added.

More than 1,000 teachers here were invited to the celebration, which divisional education officer, Wong Chung Kung, said was the very first Teachers Day do organised specifically for teachers in Sibu.

“We could have invited all teachers, but space and financial constraints did not allow us,” he lamented.

The theme of the celebration was ‘Teachers: Builders of Knowledge and Character’. Sibu Secondary School Principals Association chairman Yong Choo Tiong was also present.
