MIRI: A ceremony will be held today to launch the construction of a concrete bridge to replace the temporary Bailey Bridge at Tudan, which is popularly known as Unity Bridge.

The bridge was opened to traffic in July 2013 for residents of Permyjaya and Tudan Phase 1, 3, 4 and 5.

Tudan Phase 5 resident Alias Julaihi said the bridge became known as Unity Bridge following negotiations between a Chinese resident in Permyjaya, and Malay and Iban residents in Tudan led by Majulah Miri Group chief Datuk Hii King Chiong.

“As a temporary measure to shorten the travelling time and distance between Permyjaya and Tudan, the Unity Bailey Bridge was built while the funding for a permanent concrete bridge was sought by Datuk Hii,” Alias told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He added that the Bailey Bridge replaced a previous wooden bridge that could only accommodate motorcycles and pedestrians.

Meanwhile, United People’s Party Senadin chairman councillor Keith Chin said works on the permanent concrete bridge would begin soon.

“Residents are thankful for the temporary Bailey Bridge brought to them by Datuk Hii, which will soon be replaced by a permanent concrete bridge,” he said.
