KUCHING: Kolej Sunway Kuching will hold an open day on June 27 for its July and August 2015 intakes.

The 10am-4pm event will feature career talks, course previews, answering scholarship and financial aid enquiries and one-to-one career counseling.

SPM and STPM school leavers can come to learn about the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT), Diploma in Accounting (DIA), and Career Certificate in Book-keeping programmes.

College chief executive officer Joseph Lim hoped more school leavers will take up accountancy.

“As a leading tuition provider for accountancy courses in Sarawak, we feel duty-bound to educate the public on the opportunities of accounting,” he said.

He pointed out that young people often misconstrue accounting as a subject that is boring and difficult. Thus, they would show that in their curriculum, accountancy could be quite stimulating; and at Sunway, their chances of passing are very good.

Lim said the accountancy profession is currently very much in demand, while its flexibility and its resilient make for rewarding careers.

“Every business needs accountants, whether big or small. Running NGOs (non-governmental organisations) or charitable bodies also involves some accounting works. The bottom line is, there’s always finance involved,” he said, adding that the July and August intake has been very encouraging.

CAT is a nine paper, technician level qualification designed by ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK) that gives a comprehensive introduction to accountancy. The course can be completed within 12 to 18 months of full-time study. It is recognised by Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) as equivalent to a diploma. Upon completion, students receive exemption from the three papers (Knowledge Module) at the Fundamentals Level of ACCA.

For July intake, Sunway will be accepting enrolments for CAT from June 29 to July 6. Orientation for new students is on July 6 and classes will commence July 13.

To be eligible for CAT, students must obtain a minimum of five credits in SPM including English and Mathematics.

DIA is a two and half year course which is accredited by MQA. Consisting of 30 subjects, this course is designed to provide an alternative pathway for accounting students who want to keep their options open.

DIA programme provides a strong foundation in all aspects of business. In addition to pure accounting papers, students also study general business papers like marketing, management, economics, law, business mathematics and entrepreneurship.

Graduates of DIA thus have the foundation to pursue non-accounting further studies.

Sunway Kuching is collaborating with Sunway University and Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) which provides articulation pathways for DIA graduates to enter into Year 2 of undergraduate programmes in International Business, Accounting and Finance, or Business Management at these universities.

The college also expects to finalise arrangements with a number of other good ranking local and foreign universities to provide more articulation pathways for DIA graduates.

The next DIA intake will commence on Aug 25 with orientation for new students on Aug 17. To be eligible to enrol for the diploma, students must have passed SPM/O levels/UEC with a minimum of three credits (including SPM credit in Mathematics and a pass in English).

As for Career Certificate in Book-keeping, it is a three-month technical qualification that introduces students to the fundamentals of preparing and recording financial documentation.

This programme is awarded by Open University Malaysia’s Institute of Professional Development (IPD) and is suitable for working adults to learn how to read and prepare basic financial statements.

To be eligible to register for the Career Certificate, candidates must have completed Form 3 and preferable Form 5. In addition, they must able to read and write in Bahasa Melayu and English.

Those without formal or higher education will also be considered if they have significant and relevant working experience and can satisfy Open University Malaysia that they have the ability to cope with the programme.

The next Career Certificate in Book-keeping intake at Sunway Kuching will commence on July 6.

Meanwhile, students pursuing the college’s CAT and DIA programmes this July or August may be eligible to apply for scholarships awarded by Yayasan Sarawak/Teraju (for Bumiputera students), Yayasan Teras (for Dayak students), or Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (for non-Bumiputera students).

Those interested to apply for these scholarships can visit the college with their results slip to be interviewed.
