Aug 3 ruling on China woman’s drug case

KOTA KINABALU: The High Court here will rule on August 3 this year whether the prosecution has a case against a woman from China for drug trafficking.

Justice Datuk Nurchaya Arshad adjourned the ruling after hearing submission from Yu Jing’s counsel Ram Singh, who needed time to prepare his submission for his client, yesterday.

Yu Jing, 22, was alleged to have trafficked in 3,492 grams of syabu at the office of Customs Department, passengers check-point branch at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA), Terminal two here at 10.50pm on March 22, 2014.

She was charged under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which is punishable by the mandatory death sentence, upon conviction.

The prosecution closed its case after calling five witnesses to testify against the accused since the trial commenced on June 2.

Deputy public prosecutor Nazir Amir Johari appeared for the prosecution while counsel Ram Singh was assisted by Rizwandean Bukhari M. Borhan.

Meanwhile, the trial of a man, who was charged with trafficking in 71.07 grams of syabu, was rescheduled for July 6 to 9 at the High Court here.

Justice Ravinthran Paramaguru made the order on Norshedi Johnny, 39, at his chambers yesterday.

Norshedi was alleged to have trafficked in the drugs at the Labuan International Ferry Terminal next to the Immigration check-in counter at 11am on July 13, 2014 which was an offence framed under Section 39B (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Nazneen Zulkifli told the court that the prosecution would call five witnesses to testify against the accused.

Norshedi, who was first charged on November, 2014, was represented by counsel Korvent Wheezar E Jomiji.
