MIRI: The Ramadan bazaar in Bekenu may not be as bustling and bursting with choices as those in larger towns, but it does have its own quiet charms.

Located within the town’s Rural Transformation Centre (RTC), it houses around 100 stalls – all manned by the local Kedayans.

A visit by The Borneo Post yesterday showed that all operators took great care to ensure that their premises were clean and tidy.

There were not too many visitors in the afternoon but as the day approached, the crowd grew. It could also be seen that people came to the bazaar not only to buy ‘buka puasa’ delicacies but also to meet up with friends and strengthen old acquaintances.

Apart from food and drinks, the bazaar – managed under Subis District Council – also offers clothing, handicraft items and various accessories at special prices. According to a stall owner, the visitors comprise not only the locals but also tourists and those from here, Niah and Bintulu.

Bekenu is about a 45-minute drive away from this city.
