KUALA LUMPUR: The amendment to the Chemists Act 1975, aimed at expanding the function of chemists, is apt with current situation where the people are becoming more exposed to various products containing dangerous chemicals.

Senator Datuk Boon Som Inong said the threat could be found in food, like fruits, as well as cosmetic and health care products being used daily.

“The amendment to the act, which aims to introduce the new function of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry, is timely to provide information and advise to members and the public on matters pertaining to chemistry,” he said when debating the Chemists (Amendment) Bill 2015 in the Dewan Negara yesterday.

He said there were various products, like food, cosmetic and health products, containing chemicals not known to the public that were sold in the market. Many who did not know the chemical content in the products buy them, he said, adding that this was where chemists play an important role, which was to determine the chemical content was safe for consumption or use. — Bernama
