KUCHING: The presence of a large swarm of bees at a departure gate of Kuching International Airport (KIA) yesterday morning caused a few nervous jitters among passengers waiting for their respective flight.

The sudden appearance of the bees at Departure Gate 4 was said to have begun around 8am which led to its temporary closure for safety reasons.

Following the circulation of several photos online, a check conducted at the affected gate around 2pm showed the size of the swarm had decreased from the initial reported size.

When met, several KIA staff claimed it was the second time the bees had gathered at the gate, while several others said they were not aware of the bees’ presence.

Those who claimed to know of the incident said that based on the previous appearance of the bees, the swarm would gradually disperse on its own throughout the course of the day.

A spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department said no distress call was received about the bees, but said the matter had been brought to the attention of the KIA fire brigade for further action.
