KUALA LUMPUR: Various quarters described the move by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block access to the Sarawak Report as timely since the website had been allegedly reporting unverified content.

Malaysian Government Retirees Association president Tan Sri Wan Mahmood Pawan Teh said media freedom has its limit and must not threaten the unity and destabilise the country.

“The reports prepared by Westerners are not verified. Their agenda is to launch psychological warfare which can damage the mindset of Malaysians,” he told Bernama here, today.

He reiterated that the 45,000-member association wants the government to impose a tighter control of the social media.

“The social media is like a knife. It can do good and also harm the users,” he added.

Yesterday, the MCMC blocked the Sarawak Report website for allegedly threatening national security.

Malaysian Young Journalists Club president Dzulkarnain Taib said the Sarawak Report failed to be a responsible media.

“There is no difference between the Sarawak Report and the Wall Street Journal as their agenda is not to protect Malaysia but to destroy the country.”

Malaysian Youth Foundation chief executive officer Datuk Mustapa Othman also supported the MCMC’s move because the Sarawak Report can lead to chaos.

BlogHouse adviser Datuk Ahirudin Attan who also shared the same opinion added that the MCMC should have acted much earlier to block access to the website.

Jempol Member of Parliament, Tan Sri Isa Samad urged the government to take immediate action against anyone who tried to topple the government.

“This is a serious matter and must be stopped. I believe our people do not allow this kind of things to happen,” he told reporters at an Aidilfitri event in Port Dickson today.–BERNAMA
