Police have sufficient units in policing, says Wan Junaidi

SIBU: Police have various units to handle various kinds of crimes and situations, said Deputy Home Affairs Minister Dato Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

“There are security intelligence, crime intelligence, gambling, vice and drug, as well as serious crime and gangsterism units. We cannot continue to create unit after unit at whim and fancy. This is because existing units already cover various aspects of policing.

“Furthermore, if we created a supposedly ‘special unit’ to track down habitual offenders, then what will the unit do?

“Put these offenders under surveillance, arrest them, make their life miserable? We have the law and rules that guide the police and enforcement agencies on how things ought to be done in this country,” Wan Junaidi told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was asked on Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin’s suggestion that the police create a special unit to tackle repeat offenders.

According to Lee, even though they just left prison, some of them immediately became active again in crime.

Wan Junaidi said the whole thing must be understood from the judicial system, the law, the police, judiciary, prison and other concerned groups.
