Foreigner held over 200 boxes of contraband cigarettes

KENINGAU: Police arrested a foreign man for suspected possession of 200 boxes of contraband cigarettes in a Proton Iswara car behind a supermarket here on July 16.

District police chief Deputy Superintendent Douglas Nyeging Taong said police carried out crime prevention patrol on July 16 and arrested the suspect who was loading boxes the cigarettes into a Proton Iswara car.

He said a search of the vehicle led police to uncovering various types of cigarettes suspected to be smuggled in from a neighboring country.

The 34-year-old man was arrested while police seized the cigarettes, including a car, for investigation,” he said at a press conference here.

Douglas said the police were investigating the case under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.

The suspect has been remanded to facilitate police investigations.
