KUCHING: SK Green Road will go ‘greener’ thanks to the Trienekens Recycling Education Programme.

Kuching North Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Wahap Abang Julai said the pilot project supported by the parent-teacher association involves solid waste segregation.

He said it is important to conserve natural resources and maintain environmental health through proper and responsible solid waste management.

“This includes the improved practice of recycling by separating waste at the source and providing the younger generation with greater environmental awareness, knowledge and skills, enabling them to become future environmental stewards,” he said at the project’s launching yesterday.

Abang Wahap said Trienekens, with the support of the school and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU ), will introduce the recycling programme to promote the 5R concept of reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink and repair.

“We are promoting the habit and practices of separating solid waste at the source starting with primary schools,” he said.

He pointed out that the recycling rate in Malaysia is currently around 5 per cent per annum, far from the national target of 22 per cent by 2020.

Statistics show that 70 per cent of solid waste can be reused or recycled.
