KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman has called on Sabah Institute of Art (SIA) to revise its architectural program to aid Sabah’s preparation for earthquakes in the future.

“On 5th June, Sabah was hit by an earthquake which claimed the lives of 18 climbers and mountain guides. Many areas suffered damage, including structures at schools. The earthquake should serve as a reminder to all, and we should now look into designing structures that can absorb the impact of tremors,” said Musa in his speech, which was read by Special Tasks Minister Datuk Teo Chee Kang at the SIA 25th Anniversary Silver Gala Dinner on Saturday.

“We are aware of new natural threats and we are studying measures to reduce the impact of future earthquakes. New buildings should now integrate architectural design with the natural landscape and reduce the need for hill cutting and deforestation.

“I encourage SIA to delve into revising its architectural program and include topics on seismic resistant design to cater for Sabah’s future needs. SIA should also do research in green building management program to create graduates with specific talents,” he emphasized.

The Chief Minister also urged local higher learning institutions to adapt to the many changes in the professional human development, social capital and education through their own practices.

“I urge local higher learning institutions to adapt their own methodologies to reflect the new reality of a world characterised by technological advancements and globalisation, to make the necessary changes to keep up with the best practices available and to help deliver the best possible educational experience and training to those who want to learn,” he said.

Musa also declared the state government’s support towards the creative industry and its potential in generating high income for the nation.

“Due to Sabah’s advantage as a melting pot of diverse ethnic groups, there is much to offer to the creative industry by harnessing local culture, unique motifs, music and even history. This also ties in well with our efforts to promote Edu-tourism, which is driven by the growing popularity of local education institutions among foreign students and those from other parts of Malaysia,” he said.

“Last year, the Federal Government announced the setting up of the RM100 million Digital Content Industry Fund, which is recognition of the creative industry as a strategic growth sector. As we step into a new phase of more engaging content, it is vital for industry players to take up available tools, knowledge and guidance to unlock their creativity.

“Through the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA), we are gearing up to promote the creative industry as another growth potential by providing various incentives such as full tax exemption, investment tax allowance, exemption on import duties and much more. Investment opportunities are being created under the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) and much more to encourage active participation from the private sector in developing all vital sectors. We are working with education institutes and the private sector and this includes investing in Sabah’s development,” he added.

According to SIA CEO and president, Professor Dato Dr Wilson Yong Tung Yung, in fulfilling its role to contribute to the country’s economic vision, the institution is moving forward by exposing students to related fields of study as well as site visits, student exchange program, research work and case study, amongst others.

He also mentioned SIA’s plans of expansion and a showcase on the design of the building design was also presented that night.

“SIA would be constructing its own campus soon, located in Inanam, which could accommodate more than 3,000 students at one time. This is to meet the requirement for SIA’s future expansion to be a college university and work is currently in progress. We are determined to achieve the next stage soon as SIA has assigned a full team working on tight milestones.

“We are confident the design will become a landmark and the next iconic building in Sabah,” he declared.

Musa also lauded Yong’s achievement of becoming the first Malaysian artist to have his artwork featured on the national stamp for China during the dinner.

“With such commitment and dynamic leadership, I am optimistic that Sabah Institute of Art will be able to meet challenges and propel itself to a higher status both locally and globally. The future for SIA is certainly bright as you continuously work towards achieving a high standard in education,” acknowledged Musa.

Life Long Recognition Award was also given to local artists, Professor Francis Y S Wong, Richard Kim Cheong, Tan Siong Yong and Tina Rimmer for years of outstanding accomplishments in the art field of Architecture, Music, Calligraphy and Fine Art respectively.
