KUCHING: The upcoming Special Needs Education course is set to benefit 350 participants from the state.

To be held from Sept 14 to 16 at Riverside Majestic Hotel here, the course is organised by Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation Regional Centre for Special Education (Seameo Sen).

According to Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, those involved in special needs education would greatly benefit from the course.

“Those involved in special needs education, including care-givers and parents, will learn much from the working papers to be presented during the course.

“It will be able to educate those involved including care-givers and parents on how to go about when disabled people are in risky situations,” she said after receiving a courtesy call from Seameo Sen delegates at her office yesterday.

Fatimah said the state government welcomed such learning opportunities for Sarawakians.

“At the state-level, we are hoping to get more allocation from the government to provide for additional 250 participants, as originally only 100 participants are going to attend the course,” she added.

Meanwhile, Seameo Sen director Datin Dr Yasmin Hussain said they hoped to cater to the training needs in Sarawak where special needs education was concerned.

“Should the state government need any training in this field, we would be happy to provide the facilitators including foreign expertise from Asean countries or elsewhere,” she said.

Seameo Sen deputy director Dr Kway Eng Hock, executive Era Zaffura, its international relation officer Mohd Zulkarnain Abdul Wahab and representatives from state Education Department and Social Welfare Department were also present at the function.
