MIRI: Sarawak Baitulmal Fund (TBS) will continue to make assisting the needy and poor in the state its priority, said its general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shebli Abang Mohd Nailie said.

He disclosed that rendering assistance either financially or in kind has been part of TBS’ agenda and mission since its establishment.

“Year after year we have been rendering all sorts of assistance to the people, especially those poor and needy among the society,” he said during a Hari Raya gathering at Baitulmal office at Pelita Commercial Centre here yesterday.

“This is the reason we collect tithes from Muslims every year and we channel or use the money collected to assist the poor and needy,” he said.

Apart from giving assistance in cash and in kind, Mohd Shebli said TBS also provided assistance for education, welfare activities and programmes. Apart from the needy and poor, TBS also provided assistance to Muslim organisations and bodies.

He disclosed that from January to July 31 this year, Baitulmal Miri provided education assistance totalling RM596,600 to 463 recipients, the biggest rendered so far.

It also provided welfare assistance amounting to RM141,555 to 151 poor and needy persons and RM62,393 to 42 Islamic institutions and organisations, he added.

Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, Bekenu assemblywoman Rosey Yunus, deputy mayor Mohd Chee Kadir and Baitulmal Miri head Marini Juraibi were present.

The event also witnessed presentation of business tithes from Percetakan Nasional Berhad Miri and presentation of assistance to those eligible.
