SIBU: The art of making traditional kites among the younger generation is fast fading with the emergence of modern gadgets.

As such, Sarawak National Youth Organisation (Saberkas) Nangka Unit secretary Mohamad Safree Mohamad is optimistic
that the recent kite competition at SMK Sibu Jaya is a step in the right direction to preserve the waning practice.

“It will also go a long way to inculcate interest among the youths to make their own kites.

“This is in addition to instilling the spirit of patriotism among the younger generation in conjunction with the National Day celebration,” Mohamad Safree said when contacted yesterday.

He added the event was also held in conjunction with ‘Randau Sosial Kendalian Belia Siri 2/2015, a programme organised by Sibu Resident’s Office in collaboration with Saberkas Nangka Unit.

On its core objective, he said it was to impart kite-making skills among the younger generation.

Meanwhile, 25 colourful homemade kites decorated with ‘Jalur Gemilang’ soared up to Sibu Jaya skyline, taking the spirit of patriotism to greater heights.

Mohd Taswim was adjudged the winner followed by Adlynvania and Nurul Alyani in second and third places respectively.

The competition was participated by Form 1 and 2 students of SMK Sibu Jaya.
