BINTULU: An established primary school here needs a protective roof over its compound that would accommodate pupils and teachers during gatherings and other activities.

According to SK Orang Kaya Mohamad (OKMS) headmistress Mordiana Amir, for now the 100-year-old school holds its events out in the open.

“Whenever we conduct activities here, we are exposed to the elements such as the hot sun or rain. We hope that relevant authorities as well as concerned parties would come and help us build this facility,” she said during a Hari Raya celebration yesterday, jointly organised by OKMS and the community of Kampung Sinong.

Mordiana said the gathering aimed at fostering greater ties among teachers, pupils, parents and villagers.

“I hope that this occasion would give us all the opportunity to shake hands, as well as to visit and get to know one another better – even for a short time.”

Meanwhile OKMS Parents-Teachers Association president Yata Drahman hoped that the school together with the villagers would be able to host similar events in the future.

He viewed such collaboration as one that could enhance greater respect and understanding among the locals.

The event yesterday, which also comprised various games and performances, were attended by head of Humanitarian Development Unit under Bintulu Education Department, Awangku Ali Udin Pengiran Adenani, as well as Kampung Sinong chief Abdullah Mohd Deli.
