MIRI: Literary enthusiasts in Sarawak are urged to make known the unique cultures of various races in the state through poems or novels.

Assistant Minister of Early Childhood Education and Family Development, Rosey Yunus said this would not only promote the state but also uphold its literature.

“This state is a pot of gold for creative writing in Malaysia. Sarawak, particularly Miri, is rich in culture with people from various ethnic backgrounds living together in peace and harmony.

“Avoid producing articles that can jeopardise the unity of the various races, or those condemning the government,” she said at the opening of the Northern Sarawak Writers Association (Putera)’s ‘Books and Discussion’ at Pustaka Miri recently.

Rosey’s text of speech was read by her representative, political secretary to chief minister Councillor Suzanne Lee Tze Ha.

The event was held in collaboration with National Writers’ Affiliation (Gapena), Malaysia Books Translation Institute (ITBM) and Pustaka Miri.

It was also attended by Putera chief 1, Zainal Abidin Suhaili, its deputy chairman Poul Nanggang and secretary 1, Jaya Ramba.

In her address, Rosey hoped Putera would continue to be active in producing quality literary works to raise the nation’s standard of creative writing.

“I have been told that many of our local writers have carved their names in this industry, with many winning national and regional awards for their effort. I hope this tradition would continue,” he said.

Rosey said she was giving a RM3,000 grant to help Putera carry out its activities.
