BINTULU: A team of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) enforcement staff on routine patrol here came across illegal logs at four different locations in the vicinity of Kemena Industrial Estate (KIE) yesterday.

They seized a total of 1,065 logs of various species and sizes with estimated volume of 160 cubic metres, all without property and JH marks.

SFC also confiscated three excavators in the operation.

“We believe that the illegal logs at these four locations are meant to be transported to KIE at a suitable time later for processing in one or more of the timber mills there. Some of the logs have been extracted from a nearby forest clearing while the source(s) of the other logs are still unknown.

“We consider this a brazen and desperate act by the perpetrators because KIE is frequented by officers from the forestry agencies,” said the SFC statement.

SFC said the case has been reported to the police and the detained logs would be handed over to the Forest Department for further investigation and disposal.
