KOTA KINABALU: Four men were killed after two lorries were involved in self accidents in Ranau and Tawau on Monday.

The first case happened at Km 5, Ranau-Kundasang Road, near Kampung Kibas here when a lorry skidded off the road and turned a few times.

Yusuf Taking, the 48-year-old driver of the lorry and his passenger Abdul Hamid Yusuf, 18, died at the scene due to severe head and body injuries.

Ranau police chief DSP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said both victims were pinned to their seats in the 10.45pm incident.

“It took about two hours for Fire and Rescue Services personnel to free both men as the lorry was badly damaged,” he said, adding that both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic who was also at the scene.

According to Mohd Farhan, initial police investigation revealed that the lorry was transporting flour to Ranau from Kota Kinabalu when the driver was believed to have lost control of the vehicle.

“The lorry then skidded off the road and rammed into a small hill before it overturned and landed upside down.

“The victims’ bodies have been taken to the district hospital for post-mortem and family members have been notified,” he said.

Mohd Farhan urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in their investigation under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In the second accident, a 46-year-old lorry trailer driver and his passenger in his 50s were killed after the lorry overturned and landed on its side at Tawau-Brantian Road on Monday night.

District police chief ACP Awang Besar Dullah said both victims died at the scene due to head injuries.

He said the driver had been identified as Johan bin Suah @ Suan from Kampung Tinosa 2, Mile 7, Sandakan while the passenger had not been identified yet.

Awang said preliminary investigation showed that the lorry trailer laden with crude palm oil was headed to Tawau from Kalabakan.

It was believed that the driver lost control of the lorry before hitting the roadside and landing on its left side with the front part in the drain.

He added that the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
