SIBU: The Ministry of Works has developed a Road Accident Management System (RAMS) to identify black spots quickly and accurately.

Its minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this was one of their roles to identify accident-prone areas or black spots along all federal trunk roads in the nation, including the Kuching-Miri trunk road.

He added that black spot locations were identified through a set of criteria and standards developed by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) of the United Kingdom.

“Black spot locations are defined as locations where, on average, three or more types of road accidents have taken place within 50 metres of that location for three consecutive years.

“The ministry, through its Highway Planning Unit (HPU), will analyse the data and rank the locations through a points system whereby locations with more than 15 points will be classified as accident black spots.

“The higher the points score of any particular location means higher priority will be given to carry out remedial work,” Fadillah, who is Petra Jaya MP, told The Borneo Post.

He said in Sarawak, data collection on road accidents had been carried out since 2011 by Public Works Department (PWD) through cooperation with the police at the district level.

Remedial work had been carried out at 40 black spots along the Sarawak first trunk road between 2011 and 2014 with a total expenditure of RM15.3 million, he said

“Remedial work at 10 more locations are being carried out with an allocation of RM2 million,” he said.

All the work are expected to be completed by the end of this year.

“With the existing remedial work, there is no plan at present to install CCTVs at selected black spots along Sarawak‘s federal trunk road,” he said.
