SIBU: The flying doctor service is being temporarily put on hold following the worsening haze in the state.

Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, however, has assured all that the operation would resume one the situation improves.

“At the moment, all helicopter services are being withheld, except for fixed-winged aircraft.

“Helicopters cannot fly until the situation has improved. This started last month,” he told reporters when met after the parade held in conjunction with the 79th birthday celebration of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday.

Dr Jerip also disclosed that there had been a spike in asthma-related cases in hospitals. He said his ministry was closely monitoring the situation. However, he advised those with history of asthma problems to stay indoors.

“If you need to go outdoors, be sure to put on a face mask, as the particles in the air can be quite toxic.”

Dr Jerip also said government clinics across the state especially those in Sri Aman had registered an increase in patients exhibiting flu-like symptoms such as red eyes and runny nose.

“We advise members of the public, especially children, to stay indoors.”

The Air Pollutant Index (API) reading for Sri Aman as of 2pm yesterday was 114, while Samarahan was 133 and Kuching, 118. Dr Jerip noted that the air quality here was still moderate.

Meanwhile on dengue situation in the state, he said it was still under control.

“Sibu, however, is still a hotspot area,” Dr Jerip added.
