KUCHING: To promote environment-friendly culture, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak campus students are taking part in a worldwide ‘Clean Up The World Weekend’ campaign today and tomorrow.
They join two events that the university jointly holds with the Wildlife Conservation Society Malaysia (WCS), Permai Rainforest Resort, and Eunoia IT Solutions. The events are also supported by Sarawak Energy, Sarawak Biodiversity Centre and Royal Malaysia Police Sarawak.
Today, the students and WCS staff will be teaching SK Tanjong Bako pupils about the importance of preserving and protecting the ecosystem through interactive activities and talks.
“We hope to create a greater awareness of the importance of looking after our environment,” said Swinburne Green Club president Raffey Hilman Mohd Jeffri who conducts the activities at the primary school.
Tomorrow, his club will help out with the ‘Ride for the Wild’ bicycling event in support of the conservation of orangutans and their habitats.
The 40km cycling will start and end at Swinburne Sarawak.
The route is through Jalan Tun Jugah, Jalan Song, Jalan Setia Raja, Jalan Canna and the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway before turning left at the roundabout to the Sains Samarahan Office stretch and head towards Kampong Tanjong Bako. From there, participants will cross the Sarawak River using boats at Kampung Tanjong Bako, making the return journey to Swinburne via the Menara Sarawak Energy route.
Some activities to symbolise the conservation campaign will see participants use their own water containers for drinking, eating local traditional food at Kampung Tanjong Bako using banana leaves and riding traditional sampans to cross Sarawak River.
