KUCHING: One hundred and twelve exponents from 12 teams including the national team will be vying for top honours in the 25th National Wushu Championship at SJK Chung Hua No. 3 Alumni Hall here from Sept 25-27.

Jointly organised by the Wushu Federation of Sarawak (WFS) and Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), the championship will also serve as a pre-Sukma event for competing teams to assess their athletes.

This is the second time that Sarawak are organising a national competition after hosting the National Junior Championship in 2005.

Melaka are sending the biggest team of 16 exponents, followed by Sarawak (15), Negeri Sembilan (14), Johor (11) while the National Team, Pulau Pinang and Terengganu are sending nine exponents each, Pahang (8), Putrajaya and Perak (7) and Selangor (4).

Traditional wushu and taolu events will be featured over the three days of competition.

A welcoming dinner will be hosted for the teams and officials tonight at Mandarin Restaurant while Senator Datuk Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian will open the championship on Sept 25 at 9.30am.

In conjunction with the national meet, WFS also organised a wushu judges course at a local hotel since Tuesday. The course attended by more than 30 participants, including coaches and athletes, was conducted by international judge Tan Chin Fong from Wushu Federation of Malaysia.

Also present were WFS deputy president James Ting and Centre of Excellence for Wushu Kuching coach Ling Ung Hee.
